There are commercial nesting materials available so the hamster can construct a comfy nest to sleep in and other various curiosities for them to explore should be provided, like the plain cardboard tubes found in the center of paper towel rolls.NOTICE: Our Low Cost Veterinary Clinic and Pet Food Pantry receive over 200 calls per hour please be patient as we get back to you. Two to two and a half inches of loosely packed material should be plenty for most types, but the Siberian or Russian and Chinese varieties are comfortable with a deeper layer (around four inches). They are burrowing animals and a layer of bedding that is too thin may leave them feeling exposed and nervous. Generally hamsters will use the same corner to deposit wastes, but that is not always the case. There are units with a rectangular plastic bottom with tabs where the wire top snaps into it that will also work well. Commercially available units that connect together with tubular sections for tunneling are also available, although they will require a bit more effort to keep clean. Hamsters are easily housed in a simple habitat with a fitted screen top if necessary with a generous layer of soft bedding and or nesting material meant for small animal use (SunSeed™, Carefresh™, Oxbow™, or Kaytee™). Try utilizing the Super Pet Critter Trails and personalizing their habitat with extension tubes for more fun! Most small animals aren't too opposed to occasional or regular handling, as long as it is done with care. Housing requirements are usually fairly uncomplicated and temperature/humidity ranges are easily reproducible. The cage should be placed in a well-ventilated area, but out of the direction of drafts or direct sunlight. An exercise wheel with a solid running surface should also be provided and cleaned as necessary. The cage should be emptied and washed out with hot soapy water then rinsed and dried once a week or so, and refilled with fresh bedding. Hamsters will often fill special pouches in their jaws with food and carry it back to their nest when the food bowl is filled, so check the nest area first before refilling the hamster's dish. It should be changed as needed and food should be offered from a chew-resistant ceramic or hard plastic crock-type bowl. Water is best provided from a hanging water bottle to keep it clean and also for ease of use. Specialty Hamster diets are also available in our stores. Yet, they will love any and all attention they get from their caregiver! The spirited demeanor and cute, furry appearance of these pets may cause them to steal your heart.Ī vitamin enriched mix of garden vegetables, milo, light and dark sunflowers, oats, wheat, white and red millet, kibbled, flaked and cracked corn, and alfalfa pellets plus peanuts, peas and crispy corn crunchies does well for diet. Unlike many small animals, however, they like to live in solitude hamsters will often disagree with each other and stress out if living with one or more other hamsters. Hamsters love to eat vegetables, fruits, seeds, and nuts with their pellet hamster food as well as chew toys to help wear down their ever-growing teeth.
